The project

Adopt a clementine tree from the farm "CABET" in Bétera (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of clementines at home. The Farmer Toni will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a clementine tree cultivated under the European Union's Organic Farming regulations. We are in the process of converting and hope to get certified in 2024. During the process of adoption you can choose a name that we will engrave on a plaque and hang on your tree. The Clemenules variety was a spontaneous mutation of the Clementina Fina tree that happened in 1953 in Nules, a village located about 50 km away from Bétera. It began to be massively planted back in the 90s and is, as of today, the predominant clementine in Spain, particularly in the provinces of Castellón and Valencia where this variety originated from. Since it is a local variety and is well adapted to our geographical area, it became very popular for both farmers and consumers, which resulted in many parcels being planted, causing an excess supply. Because of this, many farmers couldn’t sustain their cultivation despite it being considered by many as the best clementine you could find. Concerned about the possibility of losing many of these plantations due to lack of profit, the Agricultural Cooperative of Bétera decided to rescue these parcels and take care of them in order to avoid their eventual destruction. One of the remarkable characteristics of this variety is the extensive duration of the period during which the fruit maintains its quality, allowing this citrus to be picked until the end of December while its organoleptic conditions remain optimal. Our plots are certified by Global Gap, an organism that guarantees good agricultural practices, traceability and respect of the environment, while also including the GRASP certification in support of our social commitment. Furthermore, the plots are registered and pending to obtain the organic certification. The productive life of a clementine tree is around 25 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your clementine tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from other trees. A clementine tree from our farm produces an average of 40 kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount from you tree to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __Box of 10 kilos of clementines__ * Clemenules (mid-November till the end of December): of medium size with a thin and smooth peel, easy to peel and with a lot of juice, usually seedless, its acidity is higher at the beginning of the season and decreases as the ripening and harvesting period advances * Farming in transition to organic farming since 2020 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * One kilo contains between 8 and 12 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 15 days in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) By analysing the maturity index of the fruit, we know that the clementine has reached its optimal moment of maturity. This is done by measuring its sugar and acidity level. We cannot rely on its external colour as there is no direct relation between the color of the skin and the internal maturity of the fruit.

When will you receive it?

We will send your clementines from mid-November till the end of December.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
