Adopt a stevia plant from "Biostevera" in Villanueva de la Vera (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic dry stevia leaves at home. The Farmer José María will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
Adopt a stevia plant that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2012. Adopt 10m² of our stevia plantation, which Biostevera cultivates organically since 2012. We are located in La Comarca de la Vera, Extremadura. We have the biggest organic plantation of Stevia in Spain. The Stevia is a millenary plant, bush-like, native to Paraguay. It was brought to Europe by the Spanish sailor Pedro Estevez, and thoroughly studied by the Italians Rebaudio and Bertoni, from which it takes its botanical name, Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni. This plant needs very warm weather in summer (around 35ºC), and not very cold winter (not under 0ºC) that is why the micro-climate from La Vera is perfect for this crop. The productive life of our plant is about 5 years. It is an irrigated cultivation with two completely different cycles during the year, 4-5 months between November and April, of hibernation; and a second cycle of growth starting in April and finishing in October. We harvest twice a year, right before the flowering of the plant, as it is the highlight quality point of the leaves. By the beginning of June, we start the first harvest, right when the plant reaches 1-1,2m of height and flowering. After the first harvest we let the plant grow again until the second flowering, and then it is cut in October. We carefully plan the harvest calendar, observing leaf growing and greening. In addition, we carry out an exhaustive quality control, residual analysis, and organoleptic quality of the stevia, to ensure the highest quality of the leaves. Finally, we package our product with care so that you can sweeten your infusions and recipes with a product of the best quality in which we put all our effort. In Biostevera we want to be a reference in organic farming in the area, and thus promote sustainability and respect for the environment in our region. We want to raise awareness among the rest of the farmers so that they move towards a sustainable productive model, and invite them to participate in our project. The productive life of a stevia plant is around 5 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your stevia plant dies, we will replace them with no additional cost and assure the delivery of your harvest from others. Each stevia plant bears an average of 1kg per season.
Each season we will send you a box with: __1kg of Stevia__ (Tea Bag Cut) The cardboard contains 1kg of stevia in TBC format, meaning, dry stevia leaves screened 2-0,2mm in our installation for its direct use into infusions. In order to preserve the stevia with all its aromatic and organoleptic qualities, we dry the stevia in our facilities, thereby preserving its intense green color and sweetness, making stevia the perfect substitute for sugar and processed sugar. Furthermore, it has no caloric intake, and it is suitable for diabetics, and shimming diets. It can be used in infusions or as a condiment to sweeten sour meals. The TBC is packed in a paper kraft bag, it includes a measuring spoon to guide the consumption, here are some ideas: * Stevia infusion: whole spoon. * Stevia as a sweetener or to enhance other flavors: half spoon. * Stevia as a condiment or other: up to taste. Stevia must be preserved in a dry, cool place, sheltered from the light. Its shelf life is three years.
When will you receive it?
You will receive our stevia in July and December, when we have harvested, and finished processing it, which is done entirely in our installations. We harvest right before the flowering (June/July and October), at this point the stevia offers its best quality and organoleptic expression. Once we harvest the stevia, we transport it to our installations, still fresh, here we dry it. As soon as the plant is dried, we separate the leaves from the stems in a mechanized procedure, and the leaves are cut and sifted to obtain the desired size, between 2-0,2mm. At last, and after having passed all our quality controls, we pack the product to prepare the shipment, so you can enjoy our stevia at home.
