Adopt 80m² of a chickpea field from "Biohof Roth" in Deutsch Jahrndorf (Austria) and receive your organic chickpeas at home. Barbara will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt 80m² of a chickpea field from our farm in Deutsch Jahrndorf (Austria). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2008. The chickpea is an annual plant from the legume family. Its Latin name is *cicer arietinum*. The plant originally comes from Turkey and India. It is an annual, herbaceous plant with a deep taproot. The chickpea is an undemanding plant that can get by with very little water. That also makes it interesting for the future, because precipitation is becoming increasingly irregular and is usually lower due to climate change. Sowing is performed in rows at the end of March until the beginning of April. After cultivation, the weeds are kept in check both mechanically and manually. We chose the Twist variety because it has a large white grain and is very suitable for food processing. The chickpea is not just interesting because of how hardy it is, we also just enjoy eating it very much. Each chickpea field produces an average of 5kg of organic chickpeas per season.
Each season we will send you a box with: 5kg of __organic chickpeas__ (paper bag) * Twist: the grain has a beautiful white colour, with a diameter of approximately 5mm, it has a slightly nutty flavour * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2008 * We have deliberately ensured that the packaging and labelling are environmentally friendly and plastic-free * Chickpeas are good cooked in stews, soups, and spreads such as hummus, or roasted and eaten as snack food * The raw peas contain indigestible phasin and the bitter substance saponin, so they always need to be boiled, blanched, roasted, etc. before consumption * We recommend that you store the chickpeas in a dry, cool and dark place and consume them within 18 months of harvesting
When will you receive it?
We sow the chickpeas at the end of March until the beginning of April, depending on the weather, and harvest them in August. Because we thresh them quite deeply, they have to be cleaned afterwards to remove stones and other impurities as best as possible. We can then send you the fresh harvest from the beginning of November and in the following months.
