You adopt 10m² of a vegetable garden plot from our farm in Ispica (Italy). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 1992. The vegetables you receive are the result of meticulous work on our farm. They are located very close to the sea, within a nature reserve, the Longarini Reserve, where only organic cultivation is possible. Near the land where we produce our vegetables live flamingos, herons, ducks and seagulls, with whom we like to share the space and part of the product we produce. One of the great advantages of the area where we are located are the very high temperatures, especially in summer, and the direct exposure to the sun, which allow our vegetables to ripen naturally without using greenhouses. The sea breeze mitigates the climate by cooling the soil surface and stabilising the humidity in the area. We grow namibia carrot, nicola potato, gloria aubergine, assilla onion, dragon fennel. The __carrot__ (*Daucus carota*) was originally not orange as we know it today, but dark purple in colour. It arrived in Europe around 1100 thanks to the Arabs who planted it in Spain. Then Catherine de Medici brought them to Italy in 1200 and introduced them into the kitchens of the aristocracy. In the 1500s, the purple carrot was very popular, but around 1600, there was a great decline of this vegetable, replaced by the orange carrot, which began to dominate the western market. It is a biennial herbaceous species, up to 100 cm high. In common parlance, carrot usually refers to the edible, orange-coloured part, which is the root. The __potato__ (*Solanum tuberosum*) has its centres of origin in Peru, Bolivia and Mexico, where it has been cultivated since the Aztec and Inca civilisations. The first Europeans who tasted it likened it to the taste of chestnuts. At first, its name was 'papa', but in Europe it was called 'potato' because it was confused with the sweet potato of tropical America. The stem is ascending, branched and up to one metre high. The leaves are pinnate and match. The corymb-shaped inflorescences are white, but sometimes pink or purple, depending on the variety. The fruit is a berry and very poisonous. The lower part of the stem generates the stolons from which the tubers are the edible part of the plant. The __aubergine__ (*Solanum melongena L.*) is a herbaceous, erect plant, from 30 cm to just over a metre high. The large, solitary flowers are purplish or even white. The fruits are large, elongated or round berries, normally black, edible after cooking. The aubergine is a relative of the potato, and they have a similar shape. The roundish fruit is dark purple in colour on the outside when fully mature, but when they start to develop they are red, and in fact are even sometimes mistaken for tomatoes. Cultivated mainly in Africa and Asia. The __onion__ (*Allium cepa L.*) lives underground and consists of modified leaves, which have an epidermis (protection). It is a biennial herbaceous plant whose life cycle, in cultivation, is interrupted at one year in order to use it for consumption. It has superficial roots, with leaves that swell at the basal portion providing the edible part. It forms a long flower stalk bearing an umbrella-like inflorescence with yellowish-white flowers. The fruit is a capsule. Its main use is as a food and condiment. __Fennel__ (*Foeniculum vulgare*) is native to Asia Minor, and in antiquity was already known to the Egyptians, Greeks and Arabs, and spread throughout the Mediterranean area. Fennel is cultivated for its fleshy, white lump of thickening leaves, which overlap one another and can reach a height of 10-15 cm above the ground, elongating and branching out to a maximum height of 80 cm. Your vegetable garden plot produces an average of 52kg of autumn organic veggie box each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
You can reserve between 2 and 8 boxes for the season, and then plan the deliveries for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. They must first be cleaned, washed and dried well, placed in an airtight container and stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.
