The project

Adopt an orange tree from the farm "Bio Agrumi Monasteri" in Floridia SR (Italy) and receive your organic oranges and lemons at home. Angelo will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you have received your organic oranges and lemons and enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an orange tree from our farm in Floridia SR (Italy). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union since 2000. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your orange tree. Navel oranges are typical citrus fruits grown in our area. Navel oranges have travelled a long way to get to Sicily, a long story that began two hundred years ago in Brazil, in San Salvador de Bahia. In the garden of a monastery, on a bitter orange tree, a branch was born (just one branch) that produced large, very sweet oranges with an easily detachable skin. A Presbyterian missionary passing by noticed them and sent pieces of the branch to the United States where they were grafted onto other orange trees. This technique is the only way to propagate a sterile plant. The new variety arrived in Riverside, California, where it would have great success and was intensively cultivated for the citrus industry and from there imported all over the world, including in southern Italy. They have a characteristic that differentiates them from all other oranges: they have a twin inside, which has remained in the peel and has not developed. Hence the name "Navel" (from the English navel = belly button), they do not even have seeds, indeed they are born from sterile flowers. Together with oranges you will receive lemons of the *Femminello* variety. The story about the origins of the lemon starts in Burma and arrives in Sicily during the Arab rule. Until the 16th century, the Syracuse lemon was only used as an ingredient for refined foods. But it was from 1800 onwards that the Syracuse lemon was made known worldwide and exported to America, England, Russia, etc. Our geographical location in Floridia makes it a perfect environment where the Femminello grows and reaches its highest quality. We have been growing oranges in this region for over 40 years and we are still a family-run farm with me, Valeria, my wife, Renato and Sara, my two children who live and work on the farm with me. Your adoption is 36 years old and its productive life is around 60 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Each orange tree bears an average of 48kg per season. You can decide how many kilos you would like to reserve from your tree and pay the maintenance costs based on the chosen quantity. This helps the Farmer to plan and sell the remaining harvest amount from your tree to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 0 boxes, which can be increased up to 0 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __Box of 7kg of oranges and 3kg of organic lemons__ * Navel orange: has an intense orange colour and is very sweet, "belly-button" at the bottom of the fruit. Beautiful and imperfect, they can be enjoyed just like that or as orange juice, sweet flavour, each variety is a little more sour at the beginning of the harvesting period * Lemon Femminello: blooms in three different periods of the year, between June and September, the incredibly juicy fruit has a very intense aroma, rich in natural oil * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2000 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * We do not store the fruit in cold chambers, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * One kilo contains between 7 and 9 fruits (the box contains between 70 and 90 fruits depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2-3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) * Depending on which period you will order, the lemons may also arrive green, but they will still be ready for consumption and perfectly riped Within the box you will find various sizes of citrus fruits. The smaller fruits are suitable for juices or for the preparation of jams while the larger ones are excellent to taste fresh. Being an organic product, the peel can be used to aromatize salty and sweet dishes, it is also possible to dry or use candied fruit.

When will you receive it?

You will receive your mixed of box navel oranges and Femminello lemons from November until January.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
