The project

Adopt an orange tree from the farm "Arancebio" in Francofonte (Italy) and receive your harvest in the form of organic blood oranges PGI Sicily and organic lemons at home. Danilo will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an orange tree from our farm in Francofonte (Italy). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union since 2004. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your orange tree. The Sicilian blood oranges are a native citrus cultivation from Sicily. They are originally from an area that expands from the Catania Valley (Piana Di Catania) up to the foothills of the Hyblaean Mountains (Monti Iblei), covering the area of Francofonte in the Syracuse Province. Our native blood oranges can be produced and commercialized as Original Sicilian Blood Oranges thanks to the PGI certification (Protected Geographical Indication). In order to obtain this certification, the orchard is subjected to periodical controls and regulations to ensure that the products are in fact grown within the certified area and pass quality controls concerning the external and internal colouring, and the sugar level (Brix Index) of the fruit. Among the several types of Sicilian blood oranges we can find the “Moro" variety, which comes from a natural budding mutation of the “Sanguinello" variety. This natural mutation provides the fruit with a higher content of anthocyanins resulting in the juice presenting the typical blood red color. The “Tarocco" variety”was discovered towards the end of the 1800’s near the territory of the city of Francofonte, our local area. This variety is another budding mutation, this time from the Moro variety. Our Tarocco and Moro oranges, just as all the other fruits we cultivate, are exclusively grown under a strict regime in order to be certified with the Organic Farming label. This goes in hand with our philosophy to protect and maintain a healthy and clean natural environment without the use of phytochemicals nor any other synthetic plant protection products. This guarantees natural fruit that can be safely consumed. Together with your blood oranges you will receive lemons of the “Femminello Siracusano” variety in your box. This lemon is a variety occurring as a mutation in ordinary lemon buds but it has a higher vitamin C and citric acid content that imparts a unique flavour. This variety is very well received and appreciated worldwide and is among the most cultivated varieties of lemons in Italy. Its name "Femminello" (female) is due to the plant's remarkable fertility. In fact, it produces lemons all year round. The Femminello Siracusano lemon tree blooms three times during the year: the Bianchetto between April and June with a light yellow peel, the Verdello between July and September with a light green peel and the Primofiore between October and March with a green or light yellow peel. Your adoption is 20 years old and its productive life is 70 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your orange tree produces an average of 100kg of organic blood oranges PGI Sicily and organic lemons each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

You can reserve between 2 and 10 boxes for the season, and then progressively plan the delivery of your boxes for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __10kg box of organic blood oranges PGI Sicily and organic lemons__ * Tarocco oranges (beginning of December until April): orange pulp that may have some red stripes, high vitamin C content, it has no seeds, balanced bittersweet taste with low acidity, round shape with smooth skin, the fruit is larger in size compared to the Moro variety * Moro oranges (beginning of January until February): the pulp has a deep red pigment due to the higher content of anthocyanins, balanced bittersweet taste with low acidity, slightly wrinkly skin with red stripes, slightly smaller size than the Tarocco variety * Femminello Siracusano (beginning of December until April): light yellow pulp, the skin colour varies from green to yellow, and it is slightly wrinkly and rich in essential oils, very few seeds, typical lemon flavour with a high acidity taste and very juicy, elliptical shaped fruit elongated at the ends * Mixed box with approx. 8kg of blood oranges and 2kg of lemons * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2004 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * We do not store the fruit in cold chambers, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo of blood oranges contains between 5 and 7 fruits (the box contains between 40 and 56 fruits depending on the size) * One kilo of lemons contains between 4 and 6 fruits (the box contains between 8 and 12 fruits depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) Oranges can be consumed as either fresh fruit or used for juicing, in salads, pastries, or marmalades. Given the fact that neither the plants nor the fruits are chemically treated, the skins can be used to prepare candied fruit, or to provide that special touch of originality and creativity to different cocktails (i.e. Orange Campari). Our lemons and their skins can be safely used to create lemon flavoured liquors and for pastries. Thanks to its organoleptic characteristics, and high citric acid content, they can be used to prepare excellent thirst-quenching drinks.

When will you receive it?

Picking and shipment are directly dependent on weather conditions that can vary from season to season. The weather in our geographical area is not only influenced by the Mediterranean Sea but also by the microclimate created by the nearby volcano Mt. Etna.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
