The project

Adopt a lemon tree of our farm "Arancebio" in Francofonte (Italy) and receive your harvest in the form of organic lemons at home. The Farmer Danilo will take care for your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?
Adopt a lemon tree that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2004. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your lemon tree. The “Femminello Siracusano” lemon is a variety occurring as a budding mutation from the normal lemon but it has a higher vitamin C and citric acid content that imparts a unique flavor. This variety is very well received and appreciated worldwide and is among the most cultivated varieties of lemons in Italy. Its name "femminello" (female) is due to the plant's remarkable fertility. In fact, it produces lemons all year round. The Lemon Femminello Siracusano blooms three times during the year: the Bianchetto between April and June with a light yellow peel, the Verdello between July and September with a light green peel and the Primofiore between October and March with a green or light yellow skin. Our lemon trees, as our other fruits are not treated with phytochemicals nor any other plant protective chemicals before nor after picking . This ensures a good and healthy product respecting our philosophy that is that of protecting the environment and our customers’ health. Our lemons are not over processed, they are picked as orders are received and immediately boxed and shipped. The productive life of a lemon tree is around 50 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your lemon tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. A lemon tree from our farm produces an average of 90 kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.
What will you receive?
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve on the moment of adoption. Shipping format: __4,5kg box of Lemon Femminello Siracusano__ * Femminello Siracusano (beginning of December until April): light yellow pulp, the skin color varies from green to yellow, and it is slightly wrinkly in appearance and rich in essential oils, very few seeds, typical lemon flavor with a high acidity taste and very juicy, elliptical shaped fruit elongated at the ends * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming seal since 2004 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * One kilo contains between 5 and 8 fruits (the box contains 55 fruits approximately, depending on the size) * In one tree you have everything from small to large fruits, so your lemons will be heterogeneous * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) Our lemons and their skins can be safely used to create lemon flavored liquors and for pastries. Thanks to its organoleptic characteristics, and high citric acid content, they can be used to prepare excellent thirst-quenching drinks.
When will you receive it?
Please, check the deadline for participating in this project (deadline for adoption) below. As of this date shipments begin. You can plan all the deliveries once you completed the adoption process. The Farmer will collect your harvest on demand and just before shipment so you will receive it fresh, not treated with wax or other preservatives. The Femminello Siracusano lemon starts ripening at the beginning of December. Shipments are available from December and can last until April. Picking and shipment are directly dependent on weather conditions that can vary from season to season. Our geographical area weather is not only influenced by the Mediterranean Sea but also by the microclimate created by the nearby volcano Mt.Etna.
Why should you adopt?
* Learn who produces your food, how and where. Receive your food in a conscious manner. * Buy directly from the farmer. Help to generate wealth and better jobs in the rural areas. * Plan ahead and enable the Farmer to produce on demand. This way we can avoid overproduction and fight food waste. * Reward Farmers who make an effort to use environmentally-friendly packaging and cultivation techniques.

Danilo Magnano
My name is Danilo Magnano, I am a great lover of citrus fruits and their cultivation, work that I learned and perfected from my grandfather and father. I live daily among the citrus groves, I have been growing them with care and passion since I was a child. My family has been growing citrus fruits for over half a century with respect for the environment and the nature that surrounds us. My working day starts very early in the morning, at 4.30 am. In the spring and during the vegetative phase of the plants, with the help of some seasonal workers, we start fertilization with products of organic origin and pruning to encourage the new vegetative shoots. From May onwards, we begin with the irrigation cycles, fixing and replacing damaged pipes and drips. In the meantime, we clean weeds with brush cutters, a very important practice that mainly serves to protect citrus groves from possible fires. These operations go on until late October when the citrus fruits begin the ripening process and are almost ready for harvesting. From November onwards, the harvesting, selection and marketing of the citrus fruits begins and continues until late June. After having worked with and directed for almost 15 years the companies that dealt with the marketing of citrus fruits and after having tested on my skin exhausting working hours and great responsibilities that also involved a lot of stress, I decided to change course and bet on my family business. I have made numerous sacrifices but believe me when I tell you that there is nothing more satisfying than working in the midst of nature. I discovered CrowdFarming by chance, and it was love at first sight. It is a very interesting project, which puts the producer in direct contact with the final consumer, without intermediaries, and which manages to give the producer the right remuneration and, on the other hand, the consumer, a fair purchase price. I like this project because it allows the producer to promote his territory, his history and his excellences in the world and the consumer to adopt the plants that best suit him, also being able to choose to buy many interesting products at a fair price.
Danilo Magnano

"I consider myself an eternal optimist and dreamer but I make sure I keep my feet well planted on solid ground. The reason to enter as a Farmer in CrowdFarming is simple, to let a lot of people know the ancient history of my territory, its people and the excellent products they are able to produce and export. I think that with the advent of globalization and the dissemination of information through social and telematic channels, more and more people are looking for and discovering a direct contact with nature and everything that surrounds them, far from the pollution and the daily city frenzy. I see a rosy future, both in agriculture and in the organic food sector. More and more people are aware that they are consuming natural and genuine products, protecting and safeguarding health and the environment."

Azienda Agricola Magnano is a family owned and managed farm established in 1962 in the outskirts of the city of Francofonte in the Sicilian province of Syracuse at 280 meters above sea level. This area is renowned for the many citrus fruits orchards of excellent quality, in particular those with red pulp. We are located next to a natural protected park with a magnificent and rich biodiversity; not least with views that will leave you speechless. With a rich history and passion for orange growing, our farm has been evolving from generation to generation, finally reaching what it has become today. It takes the family name from its manager and grower, Danilo Magnano. During the years we have looked towards a philosophy of innovation while respecting our environment and because of this, we decided in 2004 to transform our farm into an organic only fruit farm. Our farm and business is distributed across several areas within the territory of Francofonte, totaling 12 hectares (29.6 acres) of orchards. Among the many citrus varieties we currently produce you can find Navel oranges (blond pulp) and red pulp oranges like Tarocco and Moro; Femminello Siracusano lemons, Star Ruby pink grapefruits, seedless Mandalate mandarins, Nova clementines, Tacle hybrids, finger limes also known as Citrus Caviar, Bergamot oranges, Vanilla oranges, and Seville bitter oranges which are excellent for marmalades. Always following our philosophy of respecting and protecting the environment, we make sure that our most valuable resource, water, is well utilized and not wasted. Our water comes from two sources: water sharing among growers in the area with water that comes from natural springs that get diverted to each grower following a set schedule, as well as water from other natural springs in the area into our private cisterns so we can ration the water in a responsible manner. We are continuously improving our irrigation systems and cycles in order to keep our plants healthy and not waste water. To avoid using pesticides and other chemicals, in adherence to the organic methods of farming, we depend on nature to assist us. In order to fertilize the soil and provide nitrogen to the plants, we plant field beans in between rows which later get mowed and chopped, and left to naturally decompose in the ground. To combat weeds, we regularly perform maintenance and leave the cuttings to ferment on the ground in order to return the mineral salts and other micronutrients to the soil. When it comes to keeping harmful parasites at bay, we rely on an organically certified method that consists of the regular release of good insects who feed on those that tend to attack plants and fruits. As a business we have set an objective of not only providing quality products to our customers while making a profit, but also to share and create economic development opportunities within our local community. We hope to achieve this by promoting our rich territorial history and giving others the experience of tasting our history through our products. At the moment our team is composed of eight hardworking members that have been with us for 10 years. I personally take pride in ensuring that our collaborators are not only paid fairly and on time, but also that they are happy and enjoy working with us. They are an integral part of the decision making process during operations, which gives them a great sense of pride and ownership in their work. For us nothing goes to waste. Those products that do not meet our appearance expectations for sale as fresh but are still of great quality, get locally processed and transformed into juices, candied fruit, or marmalades that are also available to our customers.
