The project

Adopt an almond tree from the "AlVelAl" farm in Chirivel (Spain) and receive your organic regenerative toasted almonds at home. Santiaga will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an almond tree from our farm in Chirivel (España). The cultivation here follows regenerative farming techniques, and is certified as organic by the European Union as of 1999. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your almond tree. AlVelAl almonds are part of a project that aims to regenerate the land, which has been hard hit by desertification and degradation. Our farms are located on the Altiplano plateau in South East Spain, in what we call 'AlVelAl territory'. The farms stand at between 700 and 1000 metres above sea level. 95% of the land uses rain-fed irrigation, while the other 5% uses rescue irrigation (minimum irrigation at key moments), thereby all part of an eco-regenerative model. 'AlVelAl territory' contains the largest area of organic rainfed almond trees in Europe and the second in the world after California. The altitude of the almond trees, the rain-fed production and the richness of the soils managed with regenerative agriculture techniques all give our almonds a unique taste and organoleptic characteristics typical of our territory. The almond tree belongs to the Rosaceae family and is a fruit tree that is well adapted to the Spanish climate, it has been cultivated for centuries. It originally comes from mountainous regions of Central Asia, and quickly became popular because the seed is the edible part. It was probably brought to Spain by the Phoenicians. It's a very rustic crop, adapted to warm areas, as it requires few cold hours, and is also very tolerant to drought. You'll adopt a tree of the Largueta, Guara or Avijor variety. 'Almendrehesa' is the name we give to a type of sustainable production landscape based on pastureland. It's a crop-livestock-forest system where the almond tree, livestock (Segureño lambs), wild species and insects all live together in harmony, resulting in a truly unique product that is beneficial for the environment and for you. What's more, 'Almendrehesa' is the name chosen by the farmers who form the cooperative that manages the sale of local almonds and nuts. We carry out regenerative agriculture practices based on soil conservation and restoration, water catchment on the ground, and the promotion of biodiversity, this goes above and beyond the criteria required by the organic certificate. This forms a healthy mosaic ecosystem that is resilient to the challenges of the climate crisis. By adopting one of our almond trees, you'll be a true regenerator of our territory because if we achieve the profitability of this model, more producers will adopt it on their farms. And the more regenerative farms, the more hectares of our territory can be restored. This gives better employment and economic opportunities in our region and in turn will attract and retain more people. You can be a true regenerator and restore the nature, society and economy of AlVelAl territory! Your adoption is 12 years old and its maximum lifespan is 30 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your almond tree produces an average of 1.5kg of organic regenerative almonds each season.

What will you receive?

Each season we will send you a box with: __1.5 kg of eco-regenerative toasted almonds__: 1 x__ toasted almonds with aromatic herbs __(500 g compostable paper bag) 1 x__ toasted almonds__ (500 g compostable paper bag) 1 x__ toasted almonds with salt__ (500 g compostable paper bag) If you're a fan of intense flavours, and are also aligned with sustainable and regenerative production, you really should try our toasted almonds. We believe that an almond produced in this way is a 'golden nugget' for our territory. The almonds are toasted at a family business in Zújar, that is a member of AlVelAl. The __toasted almonds with aromatic herbs __(Guara and Avijor) are truly representative of our philosophy, as the herbs used (thyme and rosemary) are planted between the almond trees or on the edges of the plots, thereby diversifying production and creating a perfect habitat for all kinds of insects. __Toasted almonds __ these almonds are salt-free, are a mixture of Guara and Avijor varieties. They have a soft texture and an intense sweet flavour, enhanced by the toasting and the characteristic features of our land. The __toasted almonds with salt __are of the Largueta variety, which are smooth on the palate with sweet flavours. They're also a more sensitive fruit, so toasting with salt is a perfect technique to maintain the properties and the intense flavour of these very special almonds. Ideal to eat whole at any time, they also give hints of flavour and a special crunch to your salads, cheese plates and sauces. Storage tips: keep them in the fridge at 10ºC in a hermetically sealed glass jar. This means that they'll keep for up to one year with all their characteristics intact. If you don't have space in the fridge, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

When will you receive it?

Our almonds are harvested in September and October. After collecting them, we start the drying, opening, and toasting processes so that you can receive them from December onwards.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
