The project

Adopt an almond tree from the farm "Cortijo Chirlata" in Baúl (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of Organic almonds at home. The Farmer Paco will take care for your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

Adopt an almond tree from the farm "Cortijo Chirlata" in Baúl (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of Organic almonds at home. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?
Adopt an almond tree that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2007. During the process of adoption you can choose a name that we will engrave on a plaque and hang on your tree. Due to the age of the plantation, the farm has various varieties of almonds, the main ones being Ferragnes and Guara, although there are also Marta antoñeta, constató or comuna trees. Due to this particularity, in your box you will receive a mix of these traditional varieties of the area. The production of an almond tree on our farm varies greatly from one season to another, in accordance with weather conditions. At the moment of adoption you can decide the quantity that you want to receive. The productive life of an almond tree is around 35 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your almond tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from other almond trees.
What will you receive?
We will send you the box you have chosen in the adoption process. __Contents of the big box:__ * Organic unpeeled almonds (Jute bag with 2kg, without nutshell) * Organic peeled almonds (Cotton bag with 1kg) * Ground organic almonds, e.g. for baking or preparing almond milk (600g) __Contents of the small box:__ * Organic unpeeled almonds (Jute bag with 2kg, without nutshell) The almonds can be stored at a cool and dry place for more than 12 months.
When will you receive it?
Please, check the deadline for participating in this project (deadline for adoption) below. As of this date the Farmer will start preparing the orders that are to be shipped. You may select the delivery date of your box as suggested by the Farmer at check-out.
Why should you adopt?
* Learn who produces your food, how and where. Receive your food in a conscious manner. * Buy directly from the farmer. Help to generate wealth and better jobs in the rural areas. * Plan ahead and enable the Farmer to produce on demand. This way we can avoid overproduction and fight food waste. * Reward Farmers who make an effort to use environmentally-friendly packaging and cultivation techniques.

Paco Moya "Jacinto"
Ten years ago, due to the crisis, my wife and I had to shut down the textile workshop we owned in Barcelona. We decided to go and live on our almond plantation in Granada where we used to escape from our daily life whenever we could to take care of our almond trees. We were already growing organic almonds at Chirlata (which is the name of our plantation) at that time but we were not managing their sales. In 2007, my wife and I, supported by our sons, founded Almendras Chirlata to sell the harvest under our brand. Today, thanks to Crowdfarming, we cultivate our almonds thinking of the end consumer and not of intermediaries. Waking up and going to work knowing that there is a family waiting for the almonds of their tree to mature is a great responsibility which encourages us to improve every day. It inspires us to do things the right way by personal choice and not because of some regulations.
Paco Moya "Jacinto"

"In 2007 the economic crisis in Spain forced my family and I to reinvent ourselves. Therefore, we followed our passion and decided to leave the textile industry in Barcelona behind to live on agriculture in Granada. That was the time when we founded Almendras Chirlata without knowing where the country live would actually lead us. Nevertheless, we were able to turn our passion into our profession and to join all our forces to harvest the best organic almonds."

The Chirlata farm is located in the Granada highlands, flanked by the Sierra de Baza Natural Park, in the town of Baúl, in the northern part of Granada. Initially the farm belonged to the Freila Town Hall, in the 40's it was sold to a family of farmers with many children. With the money obtained by the town council they were able to build a school in the village. We bought it from that family when their parents died in 1985. The name of cortijo Chirlata comes from the main entrance to the cortijo and is called "Vereda Real Chirlata". Although our farm is planted with organic almonds, we keep areas that are called "ariales", where they keep Chaparras, esparto grass and some water areas for all kinds of animals to drink. Around the farm there are cereal crops such as wheat and barley. The water we need to water our trees is obtained from a well and stored in a pond. We use an efficient drip irrigation system to avoid wasting water. Inside the farm we have a solar plant from which we obtain the energy we need. In our project we are 8 people since 2013, and eventually hired two people for the harvest season.
