The project

Adopt a dragon fruit plant from the farm "Alhambra Tropical" in Motril (Spain) and receive your dragon fruits at home. Mara will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you have received your dragon fruits and enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a dragon fruit plant from our farm in Motril (Spain) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2024. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your dragon fruit plant. Dragon fruits are plants from the Americas, adapted to tropical and subtropical climates, which are now being introduced into southern Europe as an alternative in areas with little water. They're cacti that climb trees in search of moisture, or creep along the ground. They can grow very tall and, here in Spain, are usually cultivated in greenhouses to simulate the climate conditions of their natural habitats. In our case, the sun is the only source we use to increase the temperature of the greenhouses in winter. We plant our dragon fruits on the plain around Motril, known as the Costa Tropical of Granada. The species we work with are the best adapted to our climate: *Hylocereus ocamponis* and *Hylocereus undatus*. Both have red skin, but the first type has red pulp, whereas the pulp of the second variety is white. We grow them on a metal trellis system that they like to climb. Their flowers are hermaphroditic, but they need cross-pollination (plants need pollen from neighbouring plants), and they open at night in the moonlight. In the same season there can be several flowering cycles. We grow them on our Alhambra Tropical farm, which has been converting to organic farming since 2021. In summer we shade the greenhouses to simulate the conditions of shade and humidity in which the plants grow. Your adoption is 1 years old and its productive life is 10 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your dragon fruit plant produces an average of 12kg of dragon fruits each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

You can reserve between 2 and 4 boxes for the season, and then you can plan the delivery of your boxes for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __3 kg box of dragon fruits__ * Oval shape; medium size (about 350g per piece); fleshy skin with waxy-looking triangular bracts; red on the outside, and white or red on the inside; with small black seeds and a soft, sweet pulp * Farming in conversion to Organic Farming since 2021 * To protect the plants and ensure their growth, this product was grown with the help of additional artificial structures (green houses) * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 2 and 4 fruits * Keep them at room temperature until they are ripe, once they are fully ripe put them in the fridge to keep them longer

When will you receive it?

We collect our the dragon fruits between July and November. Choose your months and we'll send them to you straight from our farm.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
