Adopt a papaya plant from the farm "Alhambra Tropical" in Motril (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of papayas at home. Mara will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt a papaya plant from our farm in Motril (Spain) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2024. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your papaya plant. Papayas were introduced into southern Spain a few decades ago, in search of a climate similar to the one in their natural habitats, thereby making it possible to produce this fruit for the European market. Today, there are just a few farmers who grow them, as they're a complicated fruit that calls for a lot of knowledge and commitment. We plant our papayas on the plain around Motril, known as the Costa Tropical of Granada. They're the Sweet Sense variety, which have a pleasant aroma and a wonderfully sweet taste, as their name suggests. This is a huge advantage, as despite there being a fairly subtropical climate, in the winter it's not always as warm as papayas need, which makes it difficult for the fruit to ripen. We counteract this inconvenience with this variety, as it's so sweet that it always guarantees an excellent result. The papaya is a short-lived, tree-like plant that can reach up to ten metres in height. When planting, three different tree types can be chosen: some with female flowers, others with hermaphrodite flowers, and others with male flowers. We always look for trees with hermaphrodite flowers, as their elongated fruits are of the highest quality. We grow them on our Alhambra Tropical farm, which has been converting to organic farming since 2021. They're planted inside a greenhouse, in order to take advantage of the fewer hours of sunlight available in winter. When the summer comes, we place the plants outdoors, as it's no longer necessary to control the temperature.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 5 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __5kg box of papayas __ * Sweet Sense: sweet papayas with a pleasant smell, yellow skin when ripe and salmon-coloured flesh; soft and juicy texture on the palate * Cultivo en conversión a agricultura ecológica desde 2021 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 1 and 3 fruits * Keep them at room temperature until they are ripe, once they are fully ripe put them in the fridge to keep them longer * It is a climacteric fruit which is harvested when it reaches physiological maturityf; after being picked from the tree it then continues to ripen until it has reached its optimum point for consumption * Important note: the fruits usually arrive hard; to ripen them, keep them at room temperature until they are ready to eat; if you receive some fruit that is already ripe, you can either eat it straight away or keep it in the fridge We harvest the papayas when their green skin starts to turn yellow. To ensure proper ripening, it's important to keep them at an approximate room temperature of 20ºC. Once they soften and yield to the pressure of your fingers, it's advisable to keep them in the fridge at 7ºC, but not for long as they lose a lot of water. As well as being low in calories, they contain very little protein and fat. What's more, they're rich in Vitamins A, C and potassium. On top of all this, they also contain papain. __Please note__: The papaya must be harvested very close to the point of consumption, so it is likely to arrive with aesthetic damage during transport; even so, the fruit should arrive in perfect organoleptic condition.
When will you receive it?
