Main mango varieties cultivated in Europe

The mango is a fruit originating from India. There are dozens of varieties grown in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Some varieties are very similar, but you can tell them apart by the shape, size, color, flavor, or amount of fiber they have. The external color of the mango does not indicate ripeness. Some of the varieties may be green and ready to eat.

The main variety grown in Europe is Osteen, however, it is easy to find others like Keitt or Palmer. There is no one variety better or worse than another, each one has its own peculiarity. Something for everybody!

The Osteen Mango: can be considered a “native variety” of the south of Spain since it is the only area of production in the world. It has an average size of between 300 and 700 g, an ovoid shape, and a very characteristic purple-green color. Its pulp is mustard-colored, has a tangy-sweet flavor, and presents an excellent quality due to the low presence of fibers. This variety is one of the first to ripen.

The Keitt Mango: is one of the biggest mangoes with a medium size, weighing between 450 g and 1000 g, it is similar to the Osteen variety, you will be able to differentiate it by its more rounded shape and its greener skin. Its pulp has a more yellowish color and has very few fibers. Its taste is slightly tangier and its sugar content is slightly lower. This variety is one of the last to ripen.

The Palmer Mango: is easier to recognize, has a smaller size, a more elongated characteristic shape, and a marked dark red color. The average weight is between 300 and 600 g. The pulp is yellow, has very fine fibers, and is less tangy. It is usually the favorite of children!
