How has the cultivation and harvest of rice been?
At the end of the summer, we prepared for the harvest (last cycle, we reap in October). During this ﬁnal stretch, we faced the danger of ﬂooding known as “Gota Fría” or “DANA”. It’s a meteorological phenomenon in which heavy rains occur, very characteristic of our area, although the effects of climate change cause more intense rainfalls. In this case, the storms flooded our ﬁelds, and we faced a real danger of losing the harvest.
When it rains so much, the ears of rice arched due to the weight of the grains, become even heavier because they are soaked. The rice stem cannot hold the weight and the plant ends up on the ground. This rice plant doesn’t lift back up again. This is a delicate moment in the rice cycle and last year caused us many difficulties at harvest time. In any case, we were able to overcome those added problems and the last yield was a success.
What tasks have been accomplished on the farm since then?
After harvest, the ﬁeld remains fallow until spring: from October to May, the land needs to rest. The ﬁrst work done to start the cycle after fallow is tillage. In May, we till the land. In the image, you will be able to see the tilled land, combed in furrows, nourishing on the sun rays… Waiting for the entry of the water in the ﬁelds.
Does this year’s rice yield have any peculiarities to highlight?
The 2019 rice harvest has overcome the great threat from heavy rains. Due to that, we have yielded a vigorous crop.
How did the preparation of the boxes go?
The preparation of the boxes is done by hand in an artisanal process. We strive to put the best of ourselves in each bag.
